Pure Spirit / Ocean Sports Surf Team Triumph at Bournemouth Surf Comp
On Saturday 20th November the Pure Spirit Surf School Groms, sponsored by Ocean Sports Board Riders and O’Neill Wetsuits, travelled down to Bournemouth to the first of a series of inter-club competitions between Brighton, Bournemouth and the Witterings.
"We left at 7:30am on a grey morning and arrived to a 2-3ft easterly swell which was very contestable, but a dumping shore break made it very challenging for the younger kids."
Our team consisted of:
Finn Lightbown (8 years old)
Harrison Chambers (10 years old)
Max Spicer (10 years old)
Patrick Nolan (14 years old)
Annie Warner (14 years old)
Josh Munro (12 years old)
Kieran Munro (14 years old)
Cameron Munro (16 years old)
"Heats took to the water immediately with about 40 kids entering. It was non-stop action - heats were run at the same time on both sides of Boscombe Pier. It was a great sight to see the kids in the contest vests all having fun, for some it was the first comp they had entered to, with proud parents looking on."
"After a long cold day for all, the results were tabulated and after great performances by Cam and the Munroe brothers, Cam won the under 17's and Annie won for the girls! Patrick Nolan also performed well and in all the Pure Spirit Ocean Sports Brighton team triumphed!"
Results:
1st Brighton
2nd Bournemouth
3rd Witterings
Special thanks to Bournemouth for a great event, Cliff for your tireless support and encouragement for the groms. A big shout out to the two Shaun’s, all the judges, Gary Knights and all at O’Neill Wetsuits.
Well done guys.
Team Riders
Ocean Sports and O’Neill are proud to Sponsor the Munro Brothers, we have worked with Cliff Cox, their coach and mentor, to support their surfing and see them as Brightons hottest new talent - maybe one day future UK champs! O'Neill Wetsuits and Ocean Sports have backed the brothers all the way - which is just as well, as kitting out three lads with wetsuits every season was getting costly for Mum Arlene!

Paddle Round the Pier
A big thank you to all that came down to see us at Paddle Round the Pier beach festival on Brighton/Hove beach at the weekend (3rd & 4th July) - 2 days of watersports, street sports, live music and glorious sunshine!
We were involved with most of big the skating events this year – including the annual (and very fast) Ocean Sports 'Turn or Burn' Slalom Skateboard Competition, which sees some of the countries fastest skaters go head-to-head from a ramp start through sophisticated ski style timers and off through the cones flat out (check out some of the pics below). So big congratulations to 1st place Louis Selby, 2nd Sam, 3rd Mmedo & 4th place Andy Makeham. Thank you to Ian, Glen and Mike for making it all happen and everyone else on another great event – roll on next year!
Check out previous footage of our 1st place winner, Louis Selby in action below:
Our mobile skate shop went down a storm with the locals, packed with boards from Crayon, Landscape, Powell, Witchcraft, Blind, Real, Vision, Alva, Almost, Enjoi, Dark Star, Death, Heroin, G and S, Comet, Flip, Loaded and more. Big respect to Grant and the boys for building the mini ramp in only 4 days – which of course saw action all weekend….!
Not forgetting our old faithful 1948 Ford Woody that made its annual run down to the event!
Surf Legend Mark Richards Visits Ocean Sports
Australian surfing icon Mark Richards came to visit Ocean Sports, Hove, on Sunday 23rd May.
Mark Richards, known as MR, became one of the world's greatest surfing legends after winning 4 ASP world champion titles between the years of '79 to '82. He was famous for branding his surfboards with the superman logo using his own initials! By the mid 70's Mark was winning high profile surf contests and making a name for himself. Mark took to shaping his own boards, and developed his own custom shortboard, with a winged swallow tail and twin-fin. He quickly excelled to the top, and was nicknamed 'The Wounded Gull', due to his 'swooping' turns. By 1979, Mark had mastered his twin-fin board and won the World Title... for four consecutive years. He more recently returned to win the 2001 over 40's World Masters Championship. MR is hugely respected as one of the greatest surfers of all time, the true twin fin pioneer and infamous surf board shaper. MR's tour comes in time for the launch of his exclusive collaboration with Quiksilver which was inspired by MR's legacy in the surfing world.
